Stump grinding vs stump removal

Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning, toothed wheel that chews a stump into chips down below the soil line. The deeper roots stay in the ground and rot away over time. Stump removal, by contrast, digs or pulls out the whole root ball, which leaves a much bigger hole.

How stump grinding works

  1. Mark buried utilities

Buried utilities are marked. OHIO811 must be notified at least 2 working days before digging, not counting weekends and holidays, and no more than 16 calendar days ahead.

  2. Clear around the stump

Rocks, edging and debris around the stump are cleared.

  3. Grind below grade

The grinder works across the stump and the surface roots until it is below grade.

  4. Deal with the chips

Chips are raked back into the hole, left in a pile for mulch or hauled away.

  5. Top it off

You or the contractor top the hole with soil and seed once it settles.

What affects the cost of stump grinding?

The price depends on how many stumps there are, how big they are and how easy they are to reach. No prices are listed here; the contractor quotes after seeing the stumps.

  • Stump diameter and how many stumps there are
  • How far surface roots spread and whether those get ground too
  • Access: gate width, slopes, fences and soft ground
  • Rocks or buried debris in the stump
  • Whether chips are left or hauled

Combining grinding with a tree removal often saves a second trip.

Why do Medina County owners end up with stumps?

Plenty of stumps are left on purpose. Hinckley Township's tree trimming policy says trees it removes from the road right of way are cut as close to the ground as possible and the stumps are the property owner's responsibility.

Disposal is the other reason. The Medina County Solid Waste District facility takes branches and trunks but not stumps or root balls, and Wadsworth won't pick up yard waste with root balls in it. Grinding turns the stump into chips you can use.

The City of Medina handles its own treelawn stumps: it grinds them after utilities are marked, removes the grindings, backfills, lets the soil settle, then adds topsoil, seed and straw and often plants a new tree.

Stump Grinding questions

Do you need to call 811 before stump grinding?
OHIO811 puts the legal duty on whoever is doing the digging, which for stump grinding is usually the contractor. Notice has to go in at least two working days ahead, not counting weekends and holidays, and no more than 16 calendar days before the work. Confirm the contractor has done it.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding leaves a mound of chips and soil roughly where the stump was. They can be raked back into the hole, spread as mulch on beds, or hauled off. Say which you want when you request a quote so it is included.
Will the City of Medina grind a treelawn stump?
The city's Forestry Department grinds the stumps of street trees it removes, after utilities are flagged, then backfills, seeds and often replants. For a stump in your own yard, hire a private crew through the form on this page.
How deep does a stump grinder go?
Depth depends on the machine and what you plan for the spot. Planting grass over the spot needs less depth than planting a new tree there, which calls for deeper grinding and more root removal. Tell the contractor your plan.
