How much does tree removal cost in Medina?

Prices depend on the tree's height and trunk size, what it would hit if dropped, how a truck or crane can reach it, whether it is dead or storm damaged, and how much cleanup and hauling you want. We don't publish prices because every tree is different; we quote after we see yours.

  • Height, spread and trunk diameter
  • What sits underneath: roof, deck, pool, fence, power lines
  • Access for trucks, lifts and chippers, including gate width and soft lawns
  • Whether a crane or bucket truck is needed
  • Condition: dead, split or storm-damaged trees take more care
  • Cleanup, log hauling and stump grinding

Warning signs on the ISA tree risk checklist

The International Society of Arboriculture lists these as signs a tree may be a risk:

  • Large dead branches
  • Hanging branches
  • Cracks or splits
  • Cavities or rot
  • Mushrooms at the base
  • Recent construction or grade change
  • A topped tree

Who owns the trees between the sidewalk and the street in Medina?

In the city of Medina, the strip between the street and the sidewalk is the treelawn, and the trees in it are public trees under the city's care. The Forestry Department looks after about 13,000 of them, plus trees in city parks and at city buildings. Where a street has no sidewalk, the right of way is measured from the center of the road and varies by street.

The city prunes those trees on a five-year cycle in five zones, removes dead or hazardous ones, grinds the stumps and usually replants where the site suits a new tree. Most removals are done by city staff and the largest are contracted out, with a phone call to the resident first. If the tree you are worried about is in the treelawn, call Forestry at 330-722-9031 before hiring anyone.

How have ash borers and storms affected Medina trees?

In October 2006 the Ohio Department of Agriculture put all of Medina County under its emerald ash borer quarantine after finding an infested ash along I-71 just south of US 224. Infested ash typically die within five years, and by 2014 the U.S. Forest Service reported significant ash mortality across northeast Ohio.

Wind does the rest. On April 7, 2020, the National Weather Service rated an EF-1 tornado with winds up to 100 mph that ran from Lorain County into the city of Medina and caused extensive damage to trees and power lines. The city asked residents to pull branches to the treelawn for pickup afterward. See emergency storm tree removal for what to do first.

Medina tree rules to know before work starts

What about trees growing near power lines?

Ohio Edison, the FirstEnergy utility serving the area, trims along its lines on a four-year cycle and included Medina County in its 2024 program. It works only around the wires, leaves larger wood for the owner and does not prune for phone or cable lines.

FirstEnergy asks people not to work on trees near power lines. When a tree between the pole and your house has to come out, the service may need to be disconnected first, and the homeowner pays for the removal. Mention any nearby lines when you send the form so we can plan for them.

What to check before you hire anyone for tree work

The International Society of Arboriculture suggests a short checklist before you hire anyone for tree work, and we think you should use it on us too:

  • Ask for proof of insurance and call the insurance company to confirm it.
  • Check for any local permits and licenses the job needs.
  • Get more than one estimate, ask for references, and don't automatically take the lowest bid.
  • Be wary of people who go door to door offering bargains, especially after a storm.
  • Get the scope in writing, including cleanup, wood and stump.

ISA certification is voluntary, but you can confirm any certified arborist's credential with the free lookup on TreesAreGood.org.

Questions people ask before they book

Can seniors get a tree removed for free in Medina County?
We haven't found a Medina County program that pays to remove a tree on private property. If the tree is in the treelawn of a City of Medina street, though, it belongs to the city, and the city's Forestry Department at 330-722-9031 handles dead and hazardous street trees itself.
How many branches can you cut off a tree without killing it?
The International Society of Arboriculture says that, as a rule, no more than 25 percent of a tree's crown should come off at once, and less on mature trees. Young trees handle more. Removing one very large limb can leave a wound the tree can't close. See tree trimming for how pruning is done.
Who is responsible for a dead tree on the treelawn in Medina?
The City of Medina. Its Forestry Department maintains the trees in the public right of way between street and sidewalk and removes dead, diseased or hazardous ones. Call 330-722-9031 on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., or the Medina Police Department at 330-725-7777 for storm damage after hours.
What should you do if a tree falls on your house?
Get everyone away from the damaged part of the house and stay clear of any wires, which may still be live. Call the electric utility if lines are involved, photograph the damage for your insurer, then request emergency storm tree removal so the weight comes off the roof safely.
Should a dying ash tree be removed?
Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in Medina County since 2006, and infested ash typically die within five years. A dead or declining ash near a house, drive, road or play area deserves a look from an arborist. Large dead branches top the ISA's tree risk checklist, and tree removal is often the answer.

Tree work for Medina County, done the careful way

Medina Tree Removal takes down dead, leaning and storm-damaged trees, trims what can be saved and grinds the stumps, across Medina and the towns around it. We look at every tree before we price it, because what sits under a tree matters as much as the tree.

We also know the local rules that come with tree work here: who owns the treelawn trees in Medina, where branches can go in Wadsworth and Brunswick, and which roads the townships clear after a storm.
